Why D-Groups?
Before Jesus returned to the Father, He gave His followers this mission:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20)
Jesus calls us to make disciples. At FBC Benbrook, we believe that discipleship happens best when believers walk closely with one another. D-Groups give us a simple and intentional way to pursue that calling.
What is a Disciple?
A disciple of Jesus is one who is...
- Developing the mind of Christ
- Obeying the commands of Christ
- Being transformed into the image of Christ
- Participating in the mission of Christ
As followers of Christ, we grow in Him and help others grow as well. D-Groups give us a pathway to do both—mature in faith and equip others to follow Jesus.
What is a D-Group?
A D-Group consists of 3 to 5 people who gather weekly to learn, encourage, and pray together. These groups focus on:
- Scripture – reading, meditating, memorizing, and applying God’s Word
- Prayer – seeking God together and lifting one another up
- Accountability – encouraging each other to live faithfully
Our goal: make disciples who make disciples.
What are the Core Values of D-Groups?
- Peer-to-Peer Discipleship – Every voice matters. Members learn from one another rather than listening to a single teacher.
- Scripture-Centered – We engage the Bible directly, not a curriculum or book.
- Spiritual Disciplines – Bible reading, meditation, Scripture memory, and prayer help us grow deeper roots in Christ.
- Multiplication – Each group prays and plans to multiply, creating space for new believers and new disciples.
What happens in a typical D-Group meeting?
A typical meeting lasts about 90 minutes and includes:
Fellowship (10 minutes)
Scripture Memory (5–10 minutes)
Recite the weekly verse
Share insights from meditation
Bible Reading Discussion (25–35 minutes)
What promise do I need to keep?
What sin should I avoid?
What command must I obey?
What truth about God should I reflect on?
Accountability (10–25 minutes)
Prayer (10 minutes)
How do D-Groups read Scripture together?
Each week, D-Groups read the same passages and memorize the same verse.
This semester's Bible Reading Plan can be found at the bottom of this page
To help reflect deeply, members keep a Bible reading journal.
What does "journaling" mean?
Without slowing down to think deeply about what we read, our daily Bible readings will go in one eye and out the other. Each of us needs to find a method to hold onto what God is speaking to us through the Scriptures. Journaling is one way to do that.
Two helpful methods of journaling are:
The HEAR Method:
- Highlight – Write down a verse that stands out.
- Examine – Identify what it reveals about God, sin, or obedience.
- Apply – Ask how it impacts your life today.
- Respond – Pray in response to what God has shown you.
Community Bible Reading Journal:
- Adore – Praise God for who He is.
- Thanks – Thank Jesus for His work.
- Confess – Repent of sin revealed in the passage.
- Ask – Pray for the Spirit’s help and transformation.
What does accountability mean?
Every week, members ask one another questions like:
- What did you learn from God’s Word this week?
- How have you prayed for and invested in your “one” this week?
- Have you honored God in your thoughts, words, and actions?
- Have you been truthful?
- Have you shown integrity in your relationships and responsibilities?
These questions help us stay honest, humble, and growing.
If I join a D-Group, what will be expected of me?
Each member commits to:
- Pursue Christ with anticipation of transformation
- Prepare each week through reading, journaling, and memorizing Scripture
- Show up consistently for meetings
- Foster honesty, confidentiality, and encouragement
- Pray for group members and the lost
How can I join a D-Group?
At FBC Benbrook, we believe discipleship happens best together. D-Groups give us a way to grow as followers of Jesus and to help others grow too. We invite you to pray, commit, and join a group. Together, let’s follow Jesus and make disciples who make disciples.
